“Saturday Gang” — June 2012 Volunteers of the Month

It has been said that some things are better when done with others and the “Saturday Gang” proves this.  They are at most every Building and Grounds Day.  They work hard and with enthusiasm.  They appear to enjoy doing it.  Who are the “Saturday Gang”?

They are the children and youth of All Souls in particular Grant, Gretchen, and Mason Upton plus Eleanora and Andrew Lawrence.

Their example is one that the Council would like to acknowledge so we recognize the “Saturday Gang” as our June 2012 Volunteers of the Month.

All Souls Choir — May 2012 Volunteer of the Month

Our choice for the May 2012 Volunteer of the Month is a harmonious team.

They have entertained us and made a definite spiritual impact on us.  It is no wonder because are led by Rev. Barbara Jarrell.  They prove that we are greater together than we are separately.

In addition to the multi-talented Rev. Jarrell, the choir currently consists of:

  • Sopranos: Sam Adams, Renee Boswell, Pamela Carlisle, Danette Moore
  • Altos: Susan Caldwell, Maryanne Cummings, Katie Drew, Virginia Villarreal
  • Tenors: Gail Burt, Bob Jordan, Terry McNeil, Pamela Raintree
  • Basses: Phil Boswell, Rick Carlisle, Richard Denton.

The Volunteer of the Month parking space will be available to the first choir member to arrive at church on Sunday (a plot to encourage early attendance … of course not).

Laurie Lyons — March 2012 Volunteer of the Month

What word describes our Volunteer of the Month for March? Diamond.  Why?  Like the diamond, her service has been multifaceted.

Over her long years of membership at All Souls, Laurie Lyons has practically done it all, from serving on the Board in many forms including president, to serving the Silent Auction as Donation chair for several years and still assisting with it, to serving Religious Education as a frequent teacher to all age levels, and to serving on and chairing the Finance Committee.

On more than one occasion, she has facilitated the refinancing of the Church mortgage to help free up needed funds for the church’s mission.

Currently, Laurie is donating her skills on Fridays in the church office and has agreed to complete the remaining term of Treasurer vacant because George Leppla recently moved out of state.

Pam Holt — February 2012 Volunteer of the Month

The word that comes to mind with February’s Volunteer of the Month is Success.  Pam Holt has been chosen for her continuing service to the Silent Auction.  She has continued to build upon her previous work and her vision has again proven financially successful from putting together a great committee to the murder mystery.  We thank you Pam for all your hard work.

Patrick Early — December 2011 Volunteer of the Month

The word for this month is energetic.  Patrick’s high level of energy can be seen in his work on the Buildings and Grounds committee, his service on the Council, his substitution service in the office, and his creative work for the Fund-raising Committee.

In the short time he has been a member, he has made his presence felt. For these reasons, the Council selects Patrick Early as the Volunteer of the Month.

Bennett, Grant, Mason and Gretchen Upton — November 2011 Volunteers of the Month

The more the merrier they say, and that is certainly true for the November 2001 Volunteers of the Month.

The Council would like to recognize the hard and consistent work of Bennett, Grant, Mason and Gretchen Upton.  They have helped at most every Building and Grounds day as well as being willing to do whatever is asked of them.  Grant helped with the recent Blessing of the Animals. We look forward to working with them on future projects.

Pam Raintree — October 2011 Volunteer of the Month

The word describing our October 2011 Volunteer of the Month is steadfastness.

Pam has been a member of All Souls since 2008, and has served the Church in a variety of ways for a much longer time.

Whether sharing her love of art with the children and youth of RE, sharing her personal story in whatever forum she has been called upon to do so; or sharing her time to reorganize our Interweave chapter, to serve on the Welcoming Congregation committee, and to coordinate the visual art exhibit for Artist Sunday, it is for this steadfast devotion to her art, to her cause, and to her Church that inspired the Council to select Pam Raintree as our October 2011 Volunteer of the Month.

We Are a Welcoming Congregation!!

Rainbow ChaliceOn 26 July 2011, the Unitarian Universalist Association responded to our Welcoming Congregation Report:

Dear Minister, Welcoming Congregation Committee, Members and Friends,

It is with great pleasure that I inform you that your congregation has been recognized officially as a Welcoming Congregation.

Our history shows that the liberal religious tradition is affirmed every time another congregation commits itself to being a human place that affirms, welcomes and celebrates the presence of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons. Though there remains a great deal of work to do in the Association before homophobia and transphobia become things of the past, it is congregations like yours that serve as an inspiration for those who have yet to begin the work of greater inclusion and understanding.

We are also sending you two posters, suitable for framing, that read:

“We are a Welcoming Congregation: This Unitarian Universalist Community welcomes and celebrates the presence and participation of bisexual, gay, lesbian and/or transgender people.”

Congratulations, and thanks for your important work!

Sincerely,
Alex Kapitan

Welcoming Congregation Report

Welcoming CongregationThe Welcoming Congregation Program is a completely volunteer program for Unitarian Universalist congregations that see a need to become more inclusive towards bisexual, gay, lesbian, and/or transgender people.

The program consists of a series of workshops developed by the Unitarian Universalist Association. The goal of the workshops is to reduce prejudice by increasing understanding and acceptance among people of different sexual orientations.

On 22 May 2011 — after completing the required actions to become a Welcoming Congregation — we affirmed our desire to be a Welcoming Congregation through an overwhelming congregational vote.

Our report describing our Welcoming Congregation efforts and results can be found in an Adobe Acrobat PDF document here.
