8 December 2013 Worship and Religious Education Classes

AdventCandlesPlease join us at 10:30 AM on Sunday (8 December 2013) for “The Spirit of This Church and The Season” by Rev. Barbara Jarrell.

Religious Education Classes for Children, Youth and Adults will happen at 9:00 AM.

The Children and Youth continue their exploration of our Jewish and Christian heritage, including the stories of this Season of Light.

At 9:00 AM, we continue our new adult class — Understanding the Bible: A Guide for Skeptics, Seekers and Religious Liberals.

UnderstandingTheBibleThis is a companion curriculum to the book by the same name by John Buehrens.  We’ve been having a good bit of fun examining our own relationship to the Hebrew and Christian scriptures, engaging the text and claiming or reclaiming what is there for us.

This week, we take a look at the two Creation stories from Genesis:

The Biblical readings for Scholarly editions of the Bible we recommend include the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) , the New International Version (NIV), the New English Bible (NEB), or (while we are studying the Hebrew Bible) the JPS translation of the Tanakh.

If you are contemplating buying a new one, we can offer a few more suggestions in class.  Avoid paraphrase editions such as The Living Bible.  We will also have several Bibles available here for your use.

Please Note: We have two copies of the Buehrens book still available for $12.00.  They will be available Sunday morning.  If you wish to order your own copy, please use this link and the church will get a percentage of the sale.  We can place another bulk order if the demand merits it.

You may also buy the Kindle edition for $9.60 at the Amazon site using this link.  The Nook edition for $9.99 can be found using this link.

Note — You can still get a lot from the class just by reading the Biblical text and coming to class, but you will have a richer experience if you read the Buehrens book as well.
