5 October 2014 Adult Religious Education

ReclaimingPropheticWitnessBookPlease join us this Sunday (5 October 2014) at 9:30 AM for our Adult Religious Education Class.

We will be continuing our discussion of the UUA Common Read — Reclaiming Prophetic Witness: Liberal Religion in the Public Square by Paul Rasor.

Rasor makes the point that this is a crucial time for a liberal religious voice that has gone missing from public dialogue.

This week, please read the third, fourth and fifth chapters. We have only 1 paper copy of the book still available at church, and we can order more as needed. You may email Susan Caldwell to claim this copy and pay on Sunday morning.

Rev. Barbara Jarrell requests that all church members read this book — whether you’re taking the class or not.  She also says:

Toward sharpening our vision this single effort will add common references, language and understanding as we move forward together.  And it will help you be a more informed participant and contributor in those efforts.  Please join us in class or at least in reading if you can– if you will.

Although religious liberals have had a place at the forefront of almost every social justice movement throughout history, the public religious voice of late has been monopolized by the Religious Right (with the complete complicity of the media).

Rasor covers the compelling reasons why we should be speaking out with a voice of faith, and the complex tensions that may make us reluctant to do so.

Our Second Source is “Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love.”

We need to realize that we, too, must be these prophetic women and men, and not just learn about them in our history.

You do not need to have started the book to get something out of tomorrow’s introductory session.  You may email Susan Caldwell to claim this copy and pay tomorrow morning.

The cost for the trade paperback edition is $15.00, but no one who wishes to participate in the class will be denied a book for monetary reasons.  We will place another order for books this week as needed. You may also order the book for Kindle for $7.99.

Nursery Care is provided for the Adult Religious Education Classes and our Worship Service.

Activities for children and youth will be provided during the 9:30 AM Adult RE hour.  If you have an activity or project you would like to share with a multi-age group, please email Susan Caldwell or call her at (318) 465-3427.
