Layla Saad is a black Muslim woman who was raised in the UK but who now lives in Qatar.  She has written, taught, and offered workshops to a global audience.

We will be discussing the following final journal prompts in this book:

  • Day 27 — “You and Losing Privilege”
  • Day 28 — “You and Your Commitments”
  • After Day 28 — “Now What?”

Note: The class will be taking a break for three Sundays (19 June 2022, 26 June 2022, and 3 July 2022).  We will come back together on 10 July 2022 for check-in and to talk about where we go from here — please bring your ideas.

Tie-Dye Sunday (5 June 2022)

This Sunday an All Souls summer tradition returns — Tie-Dye in the Religious Education Wing.

Children are asked to bring a 100% cotton t-shirt or other cotton garment to tie-dye for themselves or for any special grownups in their lives.

We will have a few extra shirts, bandanas, and mini tote bags on hand — donations for those are welcome — but by bringing your own you have a better guarantee of getting the size you want.

We still can use some extra adult help with this project.  It will all be set up for you in advance and the instructions at each station are very clear.

Want to dye more than one garment? That’s more than likely possible, but will depend on how many kids and how long the dye lasts, so prioritize your favorite.

Of course adults who attend service and would like to tie dye afterward will be welcome as long as the dye lasts.

Note — We have not yet brought back nursery care for the littlest among us, who cannot be vaccinated against COVID.

However, infants and toddlers are welcome to be with their parents in the sanctuary.  We are very OK with baby noises and toddler wiggles.

Children and Youth Religious Education (29 May 2022)

On this Sunday (29 May 2022), children and youth religious education classes will continue to meet in person during our 11:00 AM worship service.

We have resumed our pre-COVID practice where the children and youth will join us in the sanctuary for the first 15-20 minutes and then we will sing them out to their classes.

If your child does not want to go to class, that is also OK — our services are welcoming for all ages.

We will be starting out initially with two classes grouped by age / grade:

Elementary – Pre-K – 5th Grade (Teachers:  Ashford McLain and Kevin Henry) — Our theme is “Peace, Social Justice, and the Interdependent Web.”  This week — along with their weekly service project of cleaning up the grounds and plans for their Art Swap — the group continues its focus on responding to bullies.

Middle and High School (Teachers:  Ken Peterson and Eric First) — This Sunday the group will be discussing the epidemic of gun violence in the US — both the school shootings like the one in Texas and white supremacist hate crimes like the murders in Buffalo.

We also will talk about the vast numbers of people lost every day to what has horrifyingly become “ordinary” gun violence.

What is the way forward?

Note — We have not yet brought back nursery care for our littlest members and visitors who cannot yet be vaccinated for COVID.  However, babies and toddlers are welcome to stay with their parents in the sanctuary.  We are very understanding about baby sounds in worship.

Children and Youth Religious Education (22 May 2022)

On this Sunday (22 May 2022), children and youth religious education classes will continue to meet in person during our 11:00 AM worship service.

We have resumed our pre-COVID practice where the children and youth will join us in the sanctuary for the first 15-20 minutes and then we will sing them out to their classes.

We will be starting out initially with two classes grouped by age / grade:

Elementary – Pre-K – 5th Grade (Teachers:  Ashford McLain and Kevin Henry) — Our theme is “Peace, Social Justice, and the Interdependent Web.”  This week the group turns its focus to a topic that can be tough at any age — bullying — and some strategies for responding in those situations.

Middle and High School (Teachers:  Ken Peterson and Eric First) — This Sunday Maggie Molisee will be back to start finalizing the mural plans.

We would love for everyone in this age group to have input so it’s a great Sunday to come back to middle school / high school religious education.

With the time remaining and this Sunday being Biodiversity Sunday, the group will also explore the effects of environmental racism on the ecosystem here in Louisiana.

Note — We have not yet brought back nursery care for our littlest members and visitors who cannot yet be vaccinated for COVID.  However, babies and toddlers are welcome to stay with their parents in the sanctuary.  We are very understanding about baby sounds in worship.
