Adult Religious Education — 29 October 2017

Please join us on Sunday (29 October 2017) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class.

We begin a new class discussing new streams of thought in Christianity, drawing on the writings of Father Richard Rohr, Thomas Merton, and others.

We will also explore our relationship to the Christian roots of Unitarian Universalism — whether through our experience or in coming to terms with the presence of Christianity in the culture.

22 October 2017 All-Ages Worship Service

Please join us on Sunday (22 October 2017) at 11:00 AM for “Fine and Flawed, Proud and Problematic” presented by the children, youth, and adults of All Souls.

On 15 and 22 October 2017, Unitarian Universalist congregations across North America have been revisiting the #uuwhitesupremacyteachin that began last spring.

Originally spurred by a hiring decision at the denominational level that revealed a pattern of white supremacy in hiring decisions, the original purpose of the teach-in was to take an honest look at the way white supremacy culture has affected not only the world outside our doors but also the more subtle ways it has been present within our faith tradition as well.

Our history of working for justice is a proud one in many ways but part of beginning to heal the wounds of institutional racism is looking honestly at those wounds — seeing them for what they are, and acknowledging our own complicity.

In this service, the children and youth will look at ways we go forward and build a better world for all of us.

15 October 2017 Worship Service and Religious Education for Children and Youth

Please join us on Sunday (15 October 2017) at 11:00 AM for  “They Left Me for Dead” by Mr. Lynn Cawthorne.

We are pleased to welcome Caddo Parish Commissioner Lynn Cawthorne to our pulpit this Sunday morning.

In the Christian Testament story of “The Good Samaritan,” a traveler on the Jericho road is left for dead by a priest and a Levite (both men of high standing) until he is saved by one known to him as “other” — a Samaritan.

Who are the people who are “left for dead” in the present day?  Please join us to welcome Mr. Cawthorne.

Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service.

Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.

Adult Religious Education — 15 October 2017

Please join us on Sunday (15 October 2017) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class.  Following on the heels of reading of Waking Up White by Debby Irving, we will discuss A Class Divided (the documentary screened in our class last Sunday).

This is a 1985 documentary on the reunion of an all-white third grade class that learned a valuable lesson about racism with the widely known and praised experiment pitting the “Blue eyes” against the “Brown eyes.”

The first class where teacher Jane Elliott performed the experiment was in 1968, right after the assassination of Martin Luther King.  This film was made with her class in 1970.

8 October 2017 Worship Service and Religious Education for Children and Youth

Please join us on Sunday (8 October 2017) at 11:00 AM for “Not an Occasional Act” by Rev. Barbara Jarrell.

This service in the sanctuary concludes with a ceremony outdoors for releasing regret and all that no longer serves us.

We will have a newcomer session following the service for all interested persons.  At this session, you are invited to watch a video, ask questions, and learn more about our faith as we learn more about you (as you are comfortable sharing with us).

We are continuing our season in celebration of Unitarian Universalist history, tradition, heritage, and — most importantly — the changing face of our Living Tradition that seeks to honor the past as we live in the present and work to shape a better future for all.

Our “Give Away the Plate” this Sunday will benefit the Queensborough Progressive Citizens who are working to improve the overall quality of life in the Queensborough neighborhood of Shreveport.

They are raising funds for the Huntington High School Robotics Team.
