18 January 2015 Adult Religious Education Class

NaturesGodBookPlease join us on Sunday (18 January 2015) at 9:30 AM for our adult religious education class.

We will continue our study of Nature’s God: The Heretical Origins of the American Republic by Matthew Stewart.

A very persuasive response to the idea that our country was founded as a “Christian nation” — Stewart’s work takes a close and fresh look at what the founders meant by the words in the Declaration of Independence — “the laws of nature and nature’s God.”

This Sunday, we complete our exploration of Chapter 4 — “On the Genealogy of Nature’s God,” and (time permitting) go a little way into Chapter 5 — “Self-Evident Truths.”  We still have one last hard copy of the book available at church.

You can also buy the book for both Nook and Kindle e-readers.

If ordering through Amazon, remember to go through the All Souls website so that the church gets a portion of the proceeds.  From the homepage, scroll down to find the Amazon window on the right.

“Inner peace and a life of peace are extremely challenging in our 21st century environment where technology stimulates our brains in negative ways and the pace of life keeps our hearts racing. Still, inner peace is the root of world peace.”

We are delighted to welcome back Rev. Susan M. Smith, a member of the Congregational Life Staff of the Southern Region of the Unitarian Universalist Association (holding the portfolio of Stewardship and Administration).

NaturesGodBookPlease join us on Sunday (4 January 2015) at 9:30 AM for our Adult Religious Education Class.  We will be continuing our discussion of Nature’s God:  The Heretical Origins of the American Republic by Matthew Stewart.

A very persuasive response to the idea that our country was founded as a “Christian nation,” Stewart’s work takes a close, fresh look at what the founders meant by the words in the Declaration of Independence (“the laws of nature and nature’s God”).

We have 1 more books available if you don’t have one yet.  We will continue discussing Chapter 3 (“Epicurus’s Dangerous Idea”) which will also touch on the life of the 16th century monk Giordano Bruno (that name may sound familiar if you have seen the television series Cosmos with Neil Degrasse Tyson).

Find out what Epicurus, Bruno, and Thomas Jefferson could have possibly had in common.
