27 October 2019 Worship Service and Religious Education for Children and Youth

Please join us on Sunday (27 October 2019) at 11:00 AM for “Returning to All Souls:  A Celebration of Dia de Los Muertos  (The Day of the Dead)” with Lee Spruell and Virginia Villarreal.

We are thankful and honored to welcome back Lee Spruell to our sanctuary, who will once again share his family’s celebration of the Day of the Dead, as has been celebrated in Mexico for years.

You are invited to bring a picture of a departed loved one to place on the ofrenda.

Although the theme is death, the Day of the Dead is not considered a solemn or spooky holiday.  It is not Halloween.

In many traditions, this is the time of year to feel closer to those who have departed this world, and the celebration is for the expression of our love and joy at having known them.

Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service.  Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.

Adult Religious Education — 27 October 2019

Please join us on Sunday (27 October 2019) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class:

After the Elevator Speech: But What Do You Believe?
Forming your personal credo

This week we will continue discussing some of the “big questions” that will ultimately help us to clarify and express our own personal credos and how they fit within the context of our Unitarian Universalist Principles and values.

20 October 2019 All-Ages Worship Service

Please join us on Sunday (20 October 2019) at 11:00 AM for “That All Souls Shall Grow into Harmony with the Sacred” with the children, youth and adults of All Souls.

For the past 8 weeks, our children and youth have been delving more deeply into the words we say every week in our Unison Affirmation.

Why do we say that love is our doctrine and service is our prayer?

Why is it important to seek knowledge in freedom?

And what does it mean to us to grow into harmony with the sacred?

What is sacred?

And by the way, who wrote those words in the first place?

Come and hear a few of the answers, and even more questions!

Our children and youth will also be introducing upcoming service projects and your chance to participate.

13 October 2019 Worship Service and Religious Education for Children and Youth

Please join us on Sunday (13 October 2019) at 11:00 AM for “Truth or Dare:  The Quest and the Calling” by Rev. Barbara Jarrell.

This service will culminate in a burning ceremony for the symbolic release of all that does not serve our path to wholeness.

Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service.  Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.

6 October 2019 Worship Service and Religious Education for Children and Youth

Please join us on Sunday (6 October 2019) at 11:00 AM for “Finding Balance Before the Download” by Rev. Barbara Jarrell.

As our Jewish friends celebrate the High Holy Days, we consider how the themes of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur resonate with us as Unitarian Universalists.

We are delighted this morning to welcome jazz trumpeter Don “Dirty Red” Crenshaw, who will be providing some of the music for the service.

Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service.  Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.

After the Elevator Speech: But What Do You Believe?
Forming your personal credo

For the past three weeks, we’ve worked on an “Elevator Speech” (a way of briefly explaining to others what Unitarian Universalists as a whole affirm, promote, believe, and do).

In that process, we made the distinction between an elevator speech and a credo, a statement of personal belief.

Starting this week, we’ll be discussing some questions that will ultimately help us to clarify and express our own personal credos, and how they fit within the context of our Unitarian Universalist principles and values.

29 September 2019 Blessing of the Animals All-Ages Worship Service

Please join us on Sunday (29 September 2019) at 11:00 AM for our annual Blessing of the Animals worship service for all ages.  Our featured guest speaker is Christie Chapman of WERLA (Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation of Louisiana).

Just before the celebration of the Feast Day of St. Francis on the Christian calendar, we are delighted to offer one of our most beloved services of the year — the Blessing of the Animals.

At this time of year only, your furry, feathered, finned, or scaly friends are welcomed into the sanctuary to celebrate our shared place in the interdependent web of all existence.

We do ask that you bring your animal friend on a leash or in an appropriate carrier as even the most docile animals can be unpredictable in strange circumstances.

You know your pet better than anyone and if yours is “not ready for prime time,” feel free to bring a photo or stuffed animal in lieu of the real deal.

We’re honored this year to welcome Christie Chapman of WERLA and our give away the plate collection will go toward WERLA.

Adult Religious Education — 29 September 2019

Please join us on Sunday (29 September 2019) at 9:15 AM for our adult religious education class — UU Elevator Speech.

You may be familiar with the concept of an “elevator speech” — a concise way of explaining something in the time it would take to ride a couple of floors on an elevator.

For the next three Sundays, we’ll help you come up with one of your own, to talk to others about our Unitarian Universalist faith.

This is a part of the series Faith Forward: From Visitor to Leader.

The UU Elevator Speech class will give you the sense of empowerment and ownership that reminds you that you are the church.

Last week we looked at some examples of elevator speeches from others, learned some basic tools for constructing an elevator speech and took some time to work individually on our own elevator speeches.

This week — Session 3: Sharing Your Elevator Speech.  We’ll have more opportunities to practice our elevator speeches in a safe, non-judgmental space and look at how we might answer some frequently asked questions about our faith.
