This week we will concentrate on Chapter 11 — “White Women’s Tears.”

The chapter explores not only the history of white women’s tears as potentially damaging and even deadly to black men but also looks at the more current political issue of white women crying in multi-racial settings — once again diverting attention and comfort to themselves and centering whiteness.

Tie-Dye Sunday (13 June 2021)

This Sunday (13 June 2021), please join us for Tie-Dye Sunday beginning at 1:30 PM on the back patio for creating wearable tie-dye art.

Masks will be required for all participants.

We will be working outside under the covered breezeway next to the patio.

Traditionally, this has been an opportunity for children and youth to create one-of-a-kind gifts for their Dads and/or other special grownups in their lives (Father’s Day is the following Sunday —  20 June 2021).

We usually have enough supplies that our children can do a shirt or other garment for themselves as well.

Adult volunteers are also welcome to dye a shirt as long as we have ample resources for the children and youth.

Susan Caldwell (All Souls Director of Religious Education) will be there for people to start projects between 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM.

She will stay until everyone is done.

If you can volunteer to help, text Susan at 318-465-3427, send her a Facebook message, email her, or find the Tie-Dye post on the All Souls Religious Education Facebook group and write in the comments that you can help and when you are available.

Please bring a 100% cotton t-shirt or other garment (tote bags or aprons also welcome).

Dyes do better on a pre-washed garment, and look better on white or lighter colors.

We will have some extra t-shirts, bandanas, and face masks available for a suggested donation (though money need never be an obstacle to the tie-dye experience).

Online Adult Religious Education — 13 June 2021

Please join us on Sunday (13 June 2021) at 9:00 AM for our adult religious education class via Zoom.

We will resume our White Fragility book study group with Susan Caldwell and Barbara Deger (using the book by Robin DiAngelo).

This week we will concentrate on Chapter 10 — “White Fragility and the Rules of Engagement.”  We will explore ways in which our group covenants can sometimes reinforce norms of white supremacy culture and what we can do to avoid that.

As you’ll recall, we began this current conversation looking at our All Souls Covenant of Right Relations.

In light of this chapter and what we’ve learned throughout our exploration of the book, we will revisit our covenant through an anti-racist lens.

Are there portions that we would rewrite?  If so, how?
