  • Step 6:  Allow Yourself to Feel
  • Step 7:  Commit to Not Harming or Abusing Others

Philadelphia Center — June 2023 Give-Away-The-Plate Recipient

Each month we dedicate all of our non-pledge income to an organization doing the work that best embodies our Unitarian Universalist principles and values.

For the month of June 2023 (Pride Month), we choose the Philadelphia Center — the HIV/AIDS resource center for Northwest Louisiana, including Caddo, Bossier, Webster, Claiborne, Red River, Bienville, DeSoto, Sabine, and Natchitoches Parishes.

Along with a full range of services for people living with HIV/AIDS, the Philadelphia Center offers no-cost confidential testing for HIV, hepatitis C, syphilis, and other STIs to anyone in the community.

Two ways to donate:

OnlineGo to our donation site using this link.  If you are paying your pledge, select “2023 Pledges” and enter that amount for your pledge contribution.  Then select “Collection Plate” to give the amount you would like to give to the Home is Here Shreveport and then put “GATP JUNE 2023” or “PHILADELPHIA CENTER” in the comment section.  All online collection plate contributions for the month of June 2023 will go to the Philadelphia Center.

Offline — Please send your give away the plate contribution checks to All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, 9449 Ellerbe Road, Shreveport LA  71106.  Please put “Philadelphia Center” on the memo line of the check if  you want to have 100% of your check go to the Philadelphia Center.  If you want less than 100% of your check to go to the Philadelphia Center, please put the amount you want going to the Philadelphia Center on the memo line.

This week, we will take a quick look at progress (or the lack thereof) on the bills we’ve been tracking but our main focus of our time together will be our discussion of the introductory chapters and the first of the twelve steps — “Courageous Conversations” — in Patrice Cullor’s An Abolitionist’s Handbook.

This week, we take a look at a few of the bills we are watching in the current Louisiana state legislature session — especially those affecting LGBTQIAP+ individuals and families, criminal justice, and the independence and integrity of classrooms and libraries.

We will also give some ideas for finding and following the bills that matter most to you and help us all to uphold the inherent worth and dignity of every person wherever possible.

We will also have a preview of An Abolitionist’s Handbook to decide if we want to read it together as a group.

Shreveport Mutual Aid — May 2023 Give-Away-The-Plate Recipient

Each month we dedicate all of our non-pledge income to an organization doing the work that best embodies our Unitarian Universalist principles and values.

For the month of May 2023, we choose Shreveport Mutual Aid as our give-away-the-plate recipient.

Shreveport Mutual Aid (website / Facebook) is “the act of a community becoming empowered to meet each other’s needs by caring for one another and organizing against the unjust systems that ignored those needs in the first place.”

It takes many forms in the many places where it is practiced.

Shreveport Mutual Aid has food shares every Saturday from 1000 AM to 1200 PM at Caddo Common Park in Shreveport, Louisiana.

They have establishing a Little Free Library on Texas Avenue.

And they are currently collecting warm weather supplies for unhoused people.

Pride in the Park (30 April 2023)

All Souls will be participating in the 2023 Pride in the Park event on Sunday (30 April 2023) from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Columbia Park in Shreveport, Louisiana.

This event has been rescheduled from Saturday to Sunday due to rainy weather forecasted for Saturday.

The setup time for our All Souls booth is 9:30 AM on Sunday.

Susan Caldwell will bring the canopy, brochures, banner, table, chairs, and giveaway items to the site. However, she will need at least 3 other people to help with unloading and setting everything up.
