Highland Center Ministries — April 2023 Give-Away-The-Plate Recipient

Each month we dedicate all of our non-pledge income to an organization doing the work that best embodies our Unitarian Universalist principles and values.

For the month of April 2023, we choose Highland Center Ministries.

As a member congregation of Highland Center Ministries, we designate that organization as our Give Away the Plate recipient twice each year.

Highland Center Ministries is a mosaic of churches and other organizations who join together to provide various ministries in the Highland neighborhood including the Highland Blessing Dinner, clothes closets for all ages, financial services through Pelican State Credit Union that provide low-cost loans and other banking services to keep citizens from falling prey to payday lenders, and free tax preparation services for anyone with an annual income of $55,000 or less.

Home is Here Shreveport — March 2023 Give-Away-The-Plate Recipient

Each month we dedicate all of our non-pledge income to an organization doing the work that best embodies our Unitarian Universalist principles and values.

For the month of March 2023, we choose Home is Here Shreveport (based on the program by the same name in New Orleans).

All Souls members have joined with others in the community with the aim of sponsoring more newly arrived immigrants through a program called Home is Here.

In order to raise money to get our sponsorees who have settled in the community, Louisiana Advocates for Immigrants in Detention has made it possible for us to raise money for Home is Here Shreveport through their non-profit organization.

Whitney Plantation Museum — February 2023 Give-Away-The-Plate Recipient

For the month of February 2023, we choose The Whitney Plantation Museum (near New Orleans in Wallace, Louisiana).

The Whitney Plantation Museum provides a different kind of plantation tour experience — one that tells the truth about the history and legacy of slavery in our nation.

The museum has suffered during the pandemic and in the most recent hurricanes

World Religion Day Returns (22 January 2023)

The annual World Religion Day event returns as an in-person event in the Shreveport / Bossier City area for the first time since 2020:

This is an time to come together and celebrate the great religious diversity present right here in our community.

We are back in person at the Highland Center for an afternoon of table displays, panel discussions, music, and celebration.

Volunteers for Youth Justice — January 2023 Give-Away-The-Plate Recipient

Each month we dedicate all of our non-pledge income to an organization doing the work that best embodies our Unitarian Universalist principles and values.

For the month of January 2023, we choose Volunteers for Youth Justice (VYJ).

Volunteers for Youth Justice is a community-supported non-profit that annually recruits, trains, and supports hundreds of volunteers to provide services for children, youth, and families at risk.

Their services include CASA volunteers (Court Appointed Special Advocates), a Conflict Resolution program for youth, a Truancy Assessment Service Center, Teen Court, Leadership Academy, and many more programs that serve youth and families in our community.

Mitten Tree for Maggie Lee’s Closet

The Mitten Tree for Maggie Lee’s Closet returns.

The tree will be up in the sanctuary this Sunday — so bring new mittens, gloves, scarves, hats, and coats for children to decorate the tree.

They will later go to Maggie Lee’s Closet at Highland Center Ministries — a children’s clothing closet that is free to families in need.

North Louisiana Interfaith — December 2022 Give-Away-The-Plate Recipient

Each month we dedicate all of our non-pledge income to an organization doing the work that best embodies our Unitarian Universalist principles and values.

For the month of December 2022, we choose North Louisiana Interfaith.

Interfaith is a non-partisan political organization made up of member institutions of which All Souls is one of many institutions.

We work together on issues that arise from our congregations at the local level and on statewide issues through our umbrella organization Together Louisiana.

As a member congregation, we make a financial pledge to Interfaith that we fulfill partially through our budget and supplement with Give Away the Plate giving twice each year.

Transgender Day of Remembrance Service (19 November 2022)

Please join us for the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance Service on Saturday (19 November 2022) at 2:00 PM in the All Souls sanctuary.

Join us as we remember those lost to violence in 2021 and 2022.

Because their spirits live on when we speak their true names in love.

The service is offered by the Shreveport chapter of Louisiana Trans Advocates who meet every first Sunday of every month at 1:30 PM in the social hall.
