4 November 2018 Worship Service and Religious Education for Children and Youth

Please join us on Sunday (4 November 2018) at 11:00 AM for “Loving the Hell Out of the World:  The Universalist Belief of Hosea Ballou” by Rev. Jacqueline Anne Luck.

Please be here to welcome our guest minister – Rev. Jacqueline Anne Luck.

Many of you may remember her as a member here years ago.

Rev. Jacqueline left Shreveport to attend Starr King School of the Ministry followed by serving three churches in Jackson MS, Laurel MS, and Gray TN before retiring to New Orleans LA.

As we focus this season on our Jewish and Christian heritage, it’s appropriate that we look to the Christian roots of our Universalist history.

Music will be provided by our guest pianist, Ms. Gulya Chandler.

Our “Give Away the Plate” recipient for November 2019 is The Philadelphia Center.

Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service.  Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.

28 October 2018 Worship Service and Religious Education for Children and Youth

Please join us on Sunday (28 October 2018) at 11:00 AM for  “Dia de los Muertos” with Lee Spruell, Virginia Villarreal, and Susan Caldwell

The Day of the Dead is a Mexican celebration honoring those who have gone before.

At this turning of the year when many traditions follow the cycles of the earth and turn their thoughts to those who have departed this life, we will learn from Lee Spruell and Virginia Villarreal about this unique tradition celebrated in Mexico and among Mexican communities around the world.

If you want to do so, please bring a photograph or possession of a departed loved one.

More akin to All Souls day, the holiday is not “Mexican Halloween.”

A Mexican-themed potluck will follow the service.  If you can make authentic Mexican dishes, that is wonderful and please do.  If your talents run more toward Tex-Mex, that is fine also.  If you’d rather make or pick up something all together different, no one will complain and that’s OK too.

Our “Give Away the Plate” recipient for October 2019 is Noel United Methodist Church Food Pantry.

Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service.  Children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.

21 October 2018 All-Ages Worship Service

Please join us on Sunday (21 October 2018) at 11:00 AM for “Good News in Difficult Times” presented by the children, youth, and adults of All Souls.

The 20th Century Unitarian Universalist theologian James Luther Adams said:

Religious liberalism holds that the resources (divine and human) that are available for the achievement of meaningful change justify an attitude of ultimate optimism.

Do we truly have right and reason to be hopeful?

Our children and youth will present some reasons.

This service will also include a brief memorial tribute to Carol Graywing (former member of All Souls who had moved to Seattle several years ago to be closer to her daughter and grandson, and who also passed away in September 2018).

Carol was very active in the women’s movement of the 1970’s and 1980’s along with the women’s movement within our own denomination as well.

Throughout her life, she remained a powerful voice for women, a thoughtful poet, and a seasoned leader of worship with a wonderful sense of reverence and drama. Carol’s obituary can be found here.

This Sunday is her daughter and Carol’s daughter Lauren Gaddy has bought flowers to be placed on the altar of every Unitarian Universalist church where Carol held membership — San Francisco, Little Rock, Shreveport, and Seattle.  She has also has asked that we remember her in the service.  Knowing the depth of this loss to our national faith community, we are honored to honor her.

A newcomer session will follow the service — all interested persons are welcome to attend

We will see a video about our faith and hear your stories as you are comfortable sharing them along with answering any questions you may have about Unitarian Universalism and about membership in our congregation.

Our “Give Away the Plate” recipient for October 2019 is Noel United Methodist Church Food Pantry.

Bring all your family members — the furry, feathered, and finned, the slinky, and the slithering — to join us in the sanctuary and worship together.
