Religious Education Teacher Training (22 August 2015)

If you are interested in teaching religious education during the 2015-2016 church year, please join us on Saturday (22 August 2015) from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Child care, lunch, and snacks will be provided.

Who should come to Teacher Training?

Anyone teaching religious education for children and youth — whether for the first time or the hundredth time — or even thinking you might like to try teaching Religious Education.

If you have been a member or regularly attending friend for six months or longer or even if that 6 month-period will elapse between now and 17 April 2016, you are eligible to be considered for teaching during the 2015-2016 church year. 16 August 2015 Water Communion Worship Service

Please join us on 16 August 2015 at 11:00 AM for our annual Water Communion Ceremony worship service with Rev. Barbara Jarrell, the All Souls Choir, and your stories for the water you bring.

The Water Communion is a ritual celebrated in many Unitarian Universalist Churches.

Children and youth will be with us for this service in the sanctuary (no religious education classes — the special summer activity for this Sunday is our annual pool party).

As our members and friends return from their summer adventures — whether far away or right in their own backyards — they bring with them a small container of water (from a place they have visited or representing a special memory of the summer).

We pour our waters together in a common bowl as we each briefly tell our stories and celebrate our coming back together to begin a new church year.

The water is then boiled, filtered, frozen, and saved for future water communions as well as other rituals such as child dedications.

Bring your water in a small container. If you forget or could not bring actual water from a place you visited, we will have symbolic water on hand for you to add to the bowl.

End of Summer Swim Party (16 August 2015)

Please join after our Sunday worship service for our annual end of Summer swim party.

The party will begin after our annual Water Communion worship service and will last until 4:00 PM. We are grateful for Laurie Lyons and Henry Walker for hosting this party at their house (441 Drexel Drive, Shreveport LA).

We will have burgers and hot dogs — including veggie burgers and veggie dogs — and all the trimmings.

Bring sides, desserts and drinks to share and join us for a fun farewell to summer!

Our Sunday morning religious education classes for children and youth will resume next Sunday (23 August 2015).

9 August 2015 Worship Service and Religious Education for Children and Youth

Please join us on 9 August 2015 at 11:00 AM for “Daily Practice” by Laura Flett.

We welcome back a great friend of the church — Laura Flett, teacher and author of Writing Toward the Light. The All Souls Choir will sing.

Religious education classes for children and youth are offered during the 11:00 AM service — children and youth attend the first 15-20 minutes of the service and then are dismissed to class.

Special Project for Children and Youth with Amanda Lawrence — 9 August 2015

In the next few weeks, the church will be undertaking another short-term fundraiser for the next phase of our erosion control project — this time on the south side of the building.

For this Sunday (9 August 2015), the children and youth will be working with Amanda Lawrence on the first phase of this effort. Join us on Sunday to learn more details.

Origami with Richard Denton — 2 August 2015

During the summer, we move from our regular routine of Religious Education to creative multi-generational activities and projects for children and youth.

For Sunday, 2 August 2015 — Origami with Richard Denton. The group will learn this ancient art of paper-folding, with various projects at varying levels of complexity for multiple ages.

Yoga with Robin Drury — 26 July 2015

During the summer, we move from our regular routine of Religious Education to creative multi-generational activities and projects for children and youth.

For Sunday (26 July 2015), we will have Robin Drury teaching yoga.

19 July 2015 Artist Sunday Worship

Each year, we devote an entire worship service to a celebration of the arts — for 2015, it will be this Sunday (19 July 2015) at 11:00 AM.

Each element of this service is some kind of artistic performance by our members and friends. In the past, this has included songs, instrumental music, performance art, magic, poetry, mime, dance and tai chi.

The service itself runs from 60 to 90 minutes. This will be an all-ages worship service.

The Artist Sunday celebration also features a visual arts display and sale in our religious education wing — beginning from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM and then after the worship service ends until 1:30 PM.
