Bake Sale for UNRWA

This Sunday after the 11:00 AM worship service, we are having a bake sale to benefit United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees in the Near East — especially providing much-needed relief for the people of Gaza.

You will find delicious baked goods in exchange for your worthy donation, to benefit the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.

You can help by baking, by donating something you buy from a nice bakery, or by buying and eating (a tasty form of social justice work).

This bake sale is being organized by Jennifer Russell, Eva Peck, and the members of the Shreveport Chapter of Unitarian Universalists for Justice in the Middle East.

Monthly Building and Grounds Work Day (13 April 2024)

Our monthly building and grounds work day is happening on Saturday (13 April 2024) from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.  This monthly work day usually happens on the second Saturday of each month with the occasional rare exception.

With the exception of some basic cleaning and yard work, all the work of maintaining our physical home is done by us — the members and friends of All Souls.

The sanctuary still needs some shop-vac attention after the heavy rains this past week (although it’s not as squishy as it was two days ago).

There are tasks indoors and out for all ages and abilities — this can be a great way to better know your All Souls friends as you join in a common task.

All Ages Worship (7 April 2024)

Please join us this Sunday (7 April 2024) at 11:00 AM for “Why We Cannot Turn Away (Resources for Unitarian Universalist Leaders Engaging on Israel and Palestine).”

We will be meeting in the sanctuary for this worship service.  Please join us in person at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, 9449 Ellerbe Road, Shreveport LA  71106 if you are able to do so.

Our service will also be livestreamed on Facebook Live here if you cannot attend in person.

The COVID risks for Caddo, Bossier and De Soto Parishes (the Shreveport metro area) are all low — the CDC does not recommend mandatory masking for all indoor events in “low” risk areas.

See the CDC website and the COVIDActNow website for more details.

Starting on 13 November 2022, masks will be optional indoors at All Souls.

Anyone who prefers to keep wearing a mask is welcome to do so and attending worship through livestream video is also an option.

We will still have KN95 masks available in the foyer for anyone who needs one.

We continue to recommend that you stay home if you have any symptoms, and that you keep up with all available vaccinations and boosters.

Please use this link to evaluate the current COVID risk for the Shreveport-Bossier City metro area as you make your decisions regarding masking and other COVID preventive measures while attending All Souls.

We no longer require proof of vaccination against COVID for all attendees ages 11 and up for indoor events.

However, we do strongly encourage that anyone attending our worship services or other indoor events at All Souls be vaccinated against COVID.

Please use good judgment and stay home if you have any symptoms.  Even those who have tested negative for COVID can later test positive.

Our April 2024 give-away-the-plate recipient is Chimp Haven.

And you can contribute to All Souls using this online resource.

Children and Youth Religious Education (7 April 2024)

Children and youth will go to their regular classes after being sung out of the sanctuary.

The preschool through grades 5 children’s group will have a lesson and remain in their class.

The middle and high school  youth will have check-in and then join the adults to attend a webinar from Unitarian Universalists for Justice in the Middle East featuring Jewish and Muslim Unitarian Universalists who will offer resources for engaging on the topic of Israel and Palestine.

After viewing excerpts from this webinar, the adults and youth at All Souls will join other Unitarian Universalists across the country in a facilitated discussion.

Online and In-Person Adult Religious Education — 7 April 2024

Please join us on Sunday (7 April 2024) for our adult religious education class at 9:00 AM.

Our adult religious education class is now a dual-platform class — meeting in person in the church social hall and also on Zoom.

On 11 February 2024, the adult class watched “Why Awe is Such an Important Emotion” — a video featuring Dacher Keltner (author of Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life).

The adult class has decided to read his book together and all are welcome to join the class.

This week we will be discussing the final chapter in this book —  “Epiphany.”

We still have a few books available at church and we can always order more as needed.  The cost is a donation of $15.00 but please don’t let money be an obstacle to having the book if you want to be part of this group for the final session.

Chimp Haven — April 2024 Give-Away-The-Plate Recipient

Each month we dedicate all of our non-pledge income to an organization doing the work that best embodies our Unitarian Universalist principles and values.

For the month of April 2024, we choose Chimp Haven.

Chimp Haven is the world’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary and is a home for more than 300 chimps formerly used in biomedical research.

Chimp Haven provides 200 acres of beautiful, forested sanctuary where the chimps finally get to just be chimps and enjoy many of the experiences they would have in the wild.

Two ways to donate:

OnlineGo to our donation site using this link.  If you are paying your pledge, select “2024 Pledges” and enter that amount for your pledge contribution.  Then select “Collection Plate” to give the amount you would like to give to Chimp Haven and then put “GATP APR 2024” or “Chimp Haven” in the comment section.  All online collection plate contributions for the month of April 2024 will go to Chimp Haven.

Offline — Please send your give away the plate contribution checks to All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, 9449 Ellerbe Road, Shreveport LA  71106.  Please put “Chimp Haven” on the memo line of the check if  you want to have 100% of your check go to Chimp Haven.  If you want less than 100% of your check to go to Chimp Haven, please put the amount you want going to Chimp Haven on the memo line.
