Trapped Documentary Screening (30 April 2016)

Please join us on Saturday (30 April 2016) at 7:00 PM for Trapped — a documentary on “Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers” (TRAP) laws and their effects on reproductive justice (link for trailer).

TrappedPoster

Since 2010, 288 Targeted Regulations of Abortion Providers (TRAP) laws have been passed by conservative state legislatures.  Unable to comply with these excessive and medically unnecessary measures, clinics have taken their fight to the courts.

As the U.S. Supreme Court decides in 2016 whether individual states may essentially outlaw abortion (Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt), Trapped follows the struggles of the clinic workers and lawyers who are on the front lines of a battle to keep abortion safe and legal for millions of American women.

Trapped is a feature-length documentary from director Dawn Porter, whose previous work includes Gideon’s Army (the Emmy and Independent Spirit Award-nominated film about public defenders in the Deep South) and Rise: The Promise of My Brother’s Keeper.

Trapped selected All Souls as a community screening site in March 2016 and — with the support of Hope Medical Group for Women, Shreveport-Bossier National Organization for Women (NOW), and several private donors — the screening license was fully funded in less than 24 hours.

This event is free and limited to 60 seats.  Child care is available upon request. The movie runs 1 hour, 21 minutes.

You may reserve seats and child care in advance by emailing
office@allsoulsshreveport.org.

“This Machine” — Roy Zimmerman Concert (15 March 2016)

RoyZimmermanMugshotDo you remember last year when you were kicking yourself because you missed this guy?

or …

Do you remember last year when you came to hear this guy and wished you’d brought all your friends?

Now is your chance to see singer / songwriter / satirist Roy Zimmerman, whether for the first time or for the second, third, or fourth time with friends in tow.

Join us on Tuesday (15 March 2016) at 7:00 PM at All Souls Church.

Admission is $18.00 at the door or you can pay what you are able.

“This Machine” is ninety minutes of Roy Zimmerman’s hilarious,
rhyme-intensive original songs.

The title is a reference to Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger to be sure but also an acknowledgement that songwriting does good work in the world.

Sometimes I think satire is the most hopeful and heartfelt form of expression because in calling out the world’s absurdities and laughing in their face, I’m affirming the real possibility of change. — Roy Zimmerman

Roy’s songs have been heard on HBO and Showtime.  He’s shared the stage with Bill Maher, Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, John Oliver, Kate Clinton, and George Carlin.

He’s been profiled on NPR’s All Things Considered and he’s a
featured blogger for the Huffington Post.

Spring is starting to peek out here and there on the church grounds and the forecast for Saturday is “59 degrees and mostly sunny.”

So, it’s the perfect day to come out and join your All Souls friends to work together.

And if the great outdoors still isn’t calling you, there are plenty of tasks inside as well for all ages and abilities.

Remember that except for some basic cleaning and occasional major repairs, most of our building maintenance is done by the members and friends of All Souls.
